Solace Massage is a local therapeutic massage practice in North Riding, Johannesburg. The new business required a fresh, elegant identity, to be conveyed in their online presence, from a website, to a Facebook Page.

The Solace identity is stylish and modern, and a total departure from the usual massage website, featuring the same old stock images of a person with hot stones on their back. The Solace website’s textured, earthy feel combines with the dramatic sketched image of the elegant woman to create a look and feel that is current and interesting.

The website makes use of Google Maps technology to assist people in finding their way to the venue, and the excellent Drupal content management system takes care of SEO requirements and makes updating the website fast and dead simple.

A Facebook presence is a vital part of any online strategy today. From all the clients who currently have a Facebook presence, we are seeing roughly a third of all visitors finding the company’s corporate website via Facebook. The way in which a brand can interact with it’s public on Facebook is the way forward – emails are being ignored more and more due to the high number of spam messages the average user contends with on a daily basis – and so the ‘opt-in’ and very much less aggressive nature of the Facebook connection makes it popular with users.

A Facebook user can “like” your page, and then any news from your company gets added to their daily news stream, allowing them to read the headlines, and decide if they wish to find out more.

Following the revamp of the Southern Business School website earlier this year, One Part Scissors created a Facebook App for the school that allows students at the school to ‘check-in’ and broadcast to their friends and colleagues what they are studying at Southern Business School.

The goal of this is two-fold; for the students, it allows them to let their friends, family, and colleagues know what they are studying, and give them an opportunity to send a word of encouragement by liking the story in the Facebook News Feed, or commenting on it with a message to encourage the student. For the school, this app acts as a viral mechanism for spreading the name of the school through the social media – when a student makes use of the Facebook Check-in app, it adds a news story to their feed and the news feeds of their friends on Facebook, drawing people’s attention to the school – with a quick and ready link to the website.

This will drive traffic to the website, and ultimately help in marketing the school to new prospective students.

What is a ‘Check-in’?

According to Wikipedia,

“Many social networking services, such as Foursquare, Google Latitude, Facebook, Gowalla, and Brightkite allow users to “check in” to a physical place and share their location with their friends.

Users can check in to a specific location by text messaging or by using a mobile application on a smartphone–the application will use the phone’s GPS to find the current location.

Many applications have a “Places” button or tab where a user can see a list of nearby places into which the user can check in. If a location is not on the nearby places list, the user can add the location directly from the phone. Once a user has checked in, they have the option of sharing their location with friends in services such as Twitter or Facebook”

For the purpose of this app, the student isn’t checking in to a physical space, but rather checking in to their course. But the logic is the same, as is the end goal – spreading the message of what they are doing to their friends.

OPS was approached to revamp the Southern Business School website.

The Southern Business School website was already built on the excellent Drupal content management system, so all that was required to do was create a completely new custom theme for the site. OPS used the newest style found in Southern Business School’s print advertising, to create a website that is warmer and more inviting. The rich brown gradient background is offset by the strong white, black and red of the rest of the theme, making the website content easy to read and easy to find.
OPS made use of latest CSS3 techniques to enhance the look of the website for users of modern browsers such as Firefox, Safari, or Google Chrome. These enhancements include subtle shadows on the site’s content block, and the 3-column formatting of the text makes reading faster and easier.

The menu system was also overhauled to be simpler to navigate – with the 6 most important links finding themselves in a strong white block at the top of every page, with slightly less important links floating just below the main links.

The social media aspect of this project was the creation of a Twitter theme for the Twitter account.

We have also developed a Facebook Application for Southern Business School, to expand the footprint of the school’s footprint in the social media. See the story about the Facebook Check-in App we designed here.

One Part Scissors recently created a Tumblr website for The Travel Emporium.

The theme is very versatile in that it allows The Travel Emporium to quickly and easily change the colour scheme as well as the background image of the site, and making use of the Tumblr blogging platform means that adding content is exceptionally easy.

The Tumblr platform has a very unique take on blogging, which makes “reblogging” other blogs content very easy, which begins to spread the influence of the site, if the content is sufficiently interesting. Posts are ‘tagged’ to classify them, which helps people find your content.

Building a web presence on the Tumblr platform is a great cost effective option for clients who don’t have the budget to create a fully functional content managed website. Tumblr allows for easy content management, although a full website offers a more robust platform, with potential to build a larger, more complex site (See our larger sites based on Content Management Systems here)

The Tumblr system is also very social at it’s core, with all Tumblr users interacting with the site through a dashboard which aggregates the content of all the blogs they are following. This idea of allowing your visitors to “pull” your content to themselves is the way things are moving on the web – gone are the days of it being acceptable to “push” your message into their inboxes. People are much more comfortable allowing your news to be shown in their Facebook News Feed or Tumblr Dashboard – because they have opted in, rather than having been accosted.

OPS created a social media presence for Kitchen & Bedroom Gallery. We created a Facebook Page, Twitter account, and a Tumblr blog. Links were also created back from the KBG website to the various social platforms.

Correct use of social media platforms is crucial – it’s best to play to each platform’s strengths. So in creating a blog, we styled it to look exactly like the rest of the KBG corporate site, but by using the Tumblr system, we gain the extreme ease of publishing that the Tumblr system provides. It’s also a very social blogging platform, allowing for other bloggers to “reblog” posts they enjoy.

The Twitter account is simply used for short, quick updates to keep people informed of happenings at KBG, as well as specials and other timely updates.

Facebook is a great place to gain followers and engage in relationships with clients – so the Facebook page is used to post galleries, and invite feedback from clients and fans. One Part Scissors designed a landing page for the Facebook presence that allows people to gain an immediate view of the various social options available for connecting with KBG.

Earlier in 2009, Red Cherry approached One Part Scissors to design a website for Red Cherry Television, the makers of Ads up, Spot On, and the MNET Show, among many other television based advertising platforms. Today, we launched the website of a new Red Cherry company, Red Cherry Mobile.

Red Cherry Mobile seeks to simplify the world of Mobile Marketing. The website mirrors this by keeping all the information short and sweet, and the site is quick and easy to navigate. The website is built on a content management system that allows Red Cherry to update the information as the product offering expands and new technologies are available.

OPS developed the Red Cherry Mobile logo by drawing inspiration from the main Red Cherry company’s logo. As such, it features similar lines and a similar style, but has a more modern “Web 2.0″ feel.

See the Red Cherry Mobile website here.

The “What We Do” section allows Red Cherry to upload a screenshot of the service in question, and the website automatically adds the handset around the image. This allows us to update the handset when the times comes for a newer, more modern looking handset to be featured on the website, without the need to edit all the images on the site. Upload the new handset, click update, and the entire website’s images will be up to date.

How big does your company need to be before you start worrying about your brand? Are brand manuals and strategic brainstorming about where to place the next ambient media promotion only for the likes of Diesel and Donna Karan?

This depends on what your definition of branding is. Simply put, branding is becoming known, liked and trusted. A consistent brand reassures your customers that they’re still top of mind – and makes potential customers wonder what all the talk is about.

A consistent brand meets the customer where they’re at. If your customers now spend more time on the web than in their car, how is your brand reassuring them that you know what they want? If they spend more time using Facebook than they do using email, will they meet you along their travels?

Companies of every size need to understand and utilise the power of branding when reaching their customers. It’s not just a big budget burden (or at least doesn’t have to be). It’s not only about capturing the personality of your company, but also about creating a consistent message that customers can know and trust.

So what message are you sending?
