Following the revamp of the Southern Business School website earlier this year, One Part Scissors created a Facebook App for the school that allows students at the school to ‘check-in’ and broadcast to their friends and colleagues what they are studying at Southern Business School.

The goal of this is two-fold; for the students, it allows them to let their friends, family, and colleagues know what they are studying, and give them an opportunity to send a word of encouragement by liking the story in the Facebook News Feed, or commenting on it with a message to encourage the student. For the school, this app acts as a viral mechanism for spreading the name of the school through the social media – when a student makes use of the Facebook Check-in app, it adds a news story to their feed and the news feeds of their friends on Facebook, drawing people’s attention to the school – with a quick and ready link to the website.

This will drive traffic to the website, and ultimately help in marketing the school to new prospective students.

What is a ‘Check-in’?

According to Wikipedia,

“Many social networking services, such as Foursquare, Google Latitude, Facebook, Gowalla, and Brightkite allow users to “check in” to a physical place and share their location with their friends.

Users can check in to a specific location by text messaging or by using a mobile application on a smartphone–the application will use the phone’s GPS to find the current location.

Many applications have a “Places” button or tab where a user can see a list of nearby places into which the user can check in. If a location is not on the nearby places list, the user can add the location directly from the phone. Once a user has checked in, they have the option of sharing their location with friends in services such as Twitter or Facebook”

For the purpose of this app, the student isn’t checking in to a physical space, but rather checking in to their course. But the logic is the same, as is the end goal – spreading the message of what they are doing to their friends.

Step 2: The Facebook popup appears and requests that the user log into facebook, and confirm the message they would like to post to Facebook.

One Part Scissors recently created a Tumblr website for The Travel Emporium.

The theme is very versatile in that it allows The Travel Emporium to quickly and easily change the colour scheme as well as the background image of the site, and making use of the Tumblr blogging platform means that adding content is exceptionally easy.

The Tumblr platform has a very unique take on blogging, which makes “reblogging” other blogs content very easy, which begins to spread the influence of the site, if the content is sufficiently interesting. Posts are ‘tagged’ to classify them, which helps people find your content.

Building a web presence on the Tumblr platform is a great cost effective option for clients who don’t have the budget to create a fully functional content managed website. Tumblr allows for easy content management, although a full website offers a more robust platform, with potential to build a larger, more complex site (See our larger sites based on Content Management Systems here)

The Tumblr system is also very social at it’s core, with all Tumblr users interacting with the site through a dashboard which aggregates the content of all the blogs they are following. This idea of allowing your visitors to “pull” your content to themselves is the way things are moving on the web – gone are the days of it being acceptable to “push” your message into their inboxes. People are much more comfortable allowing your news to be shown in their Facebook News Feed or Tumblr Dashboard – because they have opted in, rather than having been accosted.

One Part Scissors recently designed a number of elements to unify Andrew Brough Communication’s online presence in the social media, to further strengthen the brand. This involved creating a branded Twitter profile, setting up a Tumblr blog, and providing complete links from the andrewbrough.com corporate website.

Although andrewbrough.com is built on the Drupal Content Management System, which allows for blogging facilities, we decided to create a separate blog on the Tumblr platform. Tumblr is the rising star in the blogging world – the latest and greatest. Their creative, innovative take on the way we blog makes the platform excellent for connecting with people interested in the topics you blog about. The Tumblr blog is also being used in conjunction with Feedburner to deliver emails to subscribers of new content Andy posts to Tumblr.

OPS created a social media presence for Kitchen & Bedroom Gallery. We created a Facebook Page, Twitter account, and a Tumblr blog. Links were also created back from the KBG website to the various social platforms.

Correct use of social media platforms is crucial – it’s best to play to each platform’s strengths. So in creating a blog, we styled it to look exactly like the rest of the KBG corporate site, but by using the Tumblr system, we gain the extreme ease of publishing that the Tumblr system provides. It’s also a very social blogging platform, allowing for other bloggers to “reblog” posts they enjoy.

The Twitter account is simply used for short, quick updates to keep people informed of happenings at KBG, as well as specials and other timely updates.

Facebook is a great place to gain followers and engage in relationships with clients – so the Facebook page is used to post galleries, and invite feedback from clients and fans. One Part Scissors designed a landing page for the Facebook presence that allows people to gain an immediate view of the various social options available for connecting with KBG.

An exciting aspect of the website redesign we did for Legae was the creation of a customized Social Network for past and present employees of Legae.
Inspired by Goldman Sachs who offers a similar service to employees, Legae CEO Lawrence Madzwara specifically requested the feature for the website.

This is what Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd C. Blankfein has to say about their Alumni Network site:

“Even after our people leave Goldman Sachs, they still identify with the firm and we want to foster that connection. We have a rich history and tradition, and we invest in it. Our alumni help us recruit. They participate in volunteer activities. They come back to speak to our people, and they do business with us. Not only does this help validate our culture, it provides a real, tangible value that transcends any single generation.”

The social network will allow Legae Alumni to remain in contact long after they have moved from Legae, as well as enabling Legae to use the platform to improve the work environment for current employees, based on open, honest feedback from former employees.

The Social Network is built on the excellent Ning platform, which allows for the rapid creation of a Facebook style community that is open only to Legae Alumni, ensuring privacy and exclusivity.
